JO '07 #12 : Lamorinda Wins National Title

Tuesday, 9:55 PDT

The team gathered at the national championship game and watched their Game 2 opponents, Lamorinda, capture the National Title by defeating SoCal 5-4.

This is the first time in history that JCWP has lost to the eventual National Champion. Haha.

JO '07 #11 : Cats Lose Heartbreaker to Pacific

Tuesday, 2:55 PDT

The team lost a hard-fought game to Pacific this afternoon 7-6. It was a see-saw battle all day long with Pacific. Down 1-0 at the end of the first, the Jungle Cats relied heavily on their counter-attack in the 2nd take a 3-1 advantage into halftime. Playing their drop defense for most of the 2nd half, the team forced Pacific into taking mediocre outside shots in the 3rd quarter, and the JCats held a 1 goal advantage heading into the 4th. However, the boys from Pacific began hitting their outside shots - many of them lobs - and the Cats couldn't seem to catch a break. The game was over when, after a timeout, the team was called for an offensive foul with about 7 seconds left.

All in all, it was a great 4 days of play. The team came a long way in terms of communicating, thinking, and playing a hard 20 minutes. John Heafner led the team with 16 pts (12G, 4A), followed by Mike Sizemore (15/9/6) and Tim Dale (13/9/4).

The team comes home tomorrow night. The flight information is available on the website.

Thanks for staying up-to-date. This has been fun...

JO '07 #9 : Trek to San Fran

Monday, 6:40 PDT

After dropping Coach Milford off at the airport, the team traveled up to San Francisco to enjoy the sights and sounds of the city. We were able to drive across the Golden Gate Bridge, drive up and down the famous Lombard Street, walking along Fisherman's Warf, and seeing the Ghiradelli chocolate factory.

Dinner & a movie tonight....

JO '07 # 8 : Cats to Play for 41st Place Game

Monday, 10:55am PDT

The team played a complete, 4 quarter game, and beat Eastside 9-5 at Monte Vista pool. Captain Mike Sizemore was an offensive powerhouse with 4 G and 3 A. Fellow captain Tim Dale had 2 G and an assist. He led the team in off-the-bar shots.

It's off to San Francisco today, and we play at Noon tomorrow.

JO '07 #7 : Jungle Cats Capture First Win

Sunday, 11:06 PDT

Finally! The team played a complete game, led by John Heafner's 4 goals, and beat an over matched Houston team for their first win of the tournament. We now face off against Eastside. A win will move us into the 41st place game.

The team enjoyed some California pizza after the game with Mrs. Meyer, then headed back to the hotel to rest up for the morning game.

JO '07 #6 : Team Loses Heartbreaker to Florida Coastal

Sunday, 2:25 PDT

The Jungle Cats came out firing against Florida Coastal B with a renewed energy. The team led for most of the game, but a poor 3rd quarter (outscored 2 to 4) sunk the Cats, as they fell ultimately to Florida 9-8.

The team is not lacking in energy though, as Coach Milford is currently wrestling Jake, while Zach is taking on Johnny. It is a disturbing image. I'm pretty sure Johnny beat Zach & Coach took down Jake.

Next game is at 5:10 vs. Houston. Results will follow...

JO '07 #5 : Team Eager for "New" Day 1

Sunday, 8:50 PDT

After having a rough first day of competition against two powerful California clubs, the Jungle Cats are focused on getting their first 'W' of the tournament today.

The game 1 opponent, set for 12:10 PDT, is Florida Coast B, who lost their opening games to Utah (6-8) and Clovis (6-14). The opponent for game 2, which is definitely set for 5:10 PDT, will either be Houston B or Commerce (both teams 0-2 heading into Sunday).

I'm excited about today. We learned a lot yesterday about how we have to play; we'll see if it carries over.

JO '07 #4 : Team Falls to Lamorinda

Saturday, 11:00 PDT

The Jungle Cats run into yet another buzz-saw-like team when they faced Lamorinda in the final game of Group Play. Trying to shake things up from a disappointing performance in the early game, the Cats started with a no-hole offense and in their drop defense. The schemes seemed to be working early on, as Lamorinda was frustrated into taking outside shots under pressure, and the Cats got on the board with an early man-advantage goal from captain Mike Sizemore. Unfortunately, that would be the end of the highlights for the team, as Lamorinda fired off 14 unanswered goals and the final score was 15-1.

The team finished group play 0-2 and will play at 12:10 & 5:10 pm tomorrow.

After the 2nd game, the team make the drive to the beach at Santa Cruz. Ed Page, Will's dad, described the drive as a roller-coaster. It sure was interesting. Once we weathered the excessive traffic and unexcessive parking, the team squared off in 6 beach volleyball games and a few brave souls even got in the (freezing) ocean. IHOP was for dinner -- only on a polo trip...

More tomorrow. Thanks for reading (I hope you are). Feel free to leave comments on the blog.

JO '07 #3 : J-Cats Fall to Regency

Saturday, 9:30 PDT

It was an early morning for the team, with a 6:30 wake-up call preceding a 7:00 sharp departure. A light breakfast -- with supplies from our trip to Safeway last night -- of bagels, bananas, and the like was the energy for the team.

We arrived at the pool and the team was loose & eager to get playing. The guys had a good warm-up and Coach & I were excited about our chances. However, once the game got started, we looked a little overwhelmed. Our opponent, Regency from Santa Ana, played a strong defense against us and the team never seemed to be comfortable out there. Goalie Matt Berry played a great game with 10 saves, and John Heafner paced the team with 2 goals.

Back at the hotel. We play again at 1, then I think we're headed to Santa Cruz and the beach...

JO '07 #2 : Checked-In

Friday, 2:35 PDT

We have arrived safely at the hotel. Our flight to San Jose was delayed a bit off the ground at Phoenix because of heavy air traffic, but we arrived pretty much on time in SJ.

The hotel is great, just like Tom & I remember. The weather is great, just like SJ should be. Tonight, we'll take it easy. Coaches meeting at 6:30, then some dinner, then we get focused and ready for tomorrow morning at 8.

I'll post details of the game ASAP afterwards. Thanks for reading.

PS. M'Oneill found his original plane tickets. It has somehow fallen into Trent's bag. So weird.

JO '07 #1 : Phoenix Airport

Friday, 8:57 Arizona Time

We arrived in Phoenix safely despite a bumpy first hour on the plane. We're settled down now waiting for our connection flight to San Jose. Mike Sizemore is eating a Baconator from Wendy's and I have to admit that I'm a little jealous. Jake is reading this while I type and thinks I'm a little crazy.

Our first bit of drama has occurred: Michael O'Neill lost his plane ticket on the ramp getting on board the plane in STL. Thanks to my negotiating skills, we've secured him a ticket to San Jose.

More later on...
